Solanum pyracanthum 'Firethorn'
Firethorn
- Category: Specialty Foliage
- Height: 36 in
- Bloom Color: Purple
This is truely a specimen piece. If you are looking for a terrifyingly obscure addition that attracts attention, conversation and instills fear in passers-by, this is the wicked plant you are looking for. Also called Porcupine Tomato and Devil's Thorn, all parts of the plant are poisonous. It is not likely you'll get close enough to encounter the toxins, as there are 1" orange thorns protruding upward and downward from orange leaf veins, and along the stem. The orange leaf-veining and thorns are brilliant against silvery fuzzy leaves that are deeply lobed. Sure, it has little star-shaped purple flowers, but you are not buying this plant for its flowers- you are using it as a warning sign to your neighbors to stay off your property.
