Prenanthes alba

Lion's Foot

  • Category: Natives
  • Hardiness Zone: 3
  • Height: 36-48 inches

An uncommon shade-loving fall bloomer from the north county. Somewhat variable, deeply cut leaves climb the tall stems, decrease in size as they near the apex, and yes, some of them are shaped like a lion's paw print. Occasionally, the stalk and foliage veins exhibit burgundy shading; you'll find more of that dusty rose color on the tubular section of the dangling white flowers. Words cannot truly communicate the unusual look of this plant; please check out a photo! It will develop a tap root, is not a big spreader, and prefers medium dry to medium wet soils; too dry and it won't be happy.
