Geranium maculatum

Wild Geranium

  • Category: Natives
  • Hardiness Zone: 3
  • Height: 12-18 inches
  • Spread: 12 inches
  • Bloom Color: Lavender, Rose

You know the spring ephemeral wildflower season is winding down when the five-petaled rosy lavender blooms of wild geranium are cavorting on their delicate stalks above the deeply incised leaves. Walking through a woodland in early May carpeted with these favorites will gladden your northern soul. Bee and butterfly souls too. It's not a true ephemeral as the leaves do not go dormant, but they will get somewhat scruffy looking by late summer. Although we think of it as a woodland plant, it can take plenty of sun in a garden setting. Can spread around a bit, but that's probably a good thing, right?
