Fragaria vesca
Woodland Strawberry
- Category: Natives
- Hardiness Zone: 3
- Height: 8-10 inches
- Spread: 12 inches
Why two wild strawberries, you ask? F. vesca is a bit taller, and the fruit is held above the foliage, making it easier to spot and pick. It also likes a little more moisture and shade than F. virginiana. The foliage is brighter green and more deeply toothed, and the tiny seeds are raised on the surface of the fruits. It spreads a bit more slowly than its cousin. F. vesca is usually described as Eurasian in origin; this is the North American subpecies.
