Allium cernuum

Nodding Onion

  • Category: Natives
  • Hardiness Zone: 3
  • Height: 12-18 in

Appears a bit like garlic chives trying to look at the ground. While this plant is edible, it might be too pretty to eat, with those clusters of delicate lavender, white and pale pink stars hanging upside down. Bees will be glad you didn't eat your patch; they don't mind working with upside down flowers.  Deer will walk right on by as they don't like the onion-y smell. It's happiest with a decent amount of sunlight and soil that is not too dry. Blooms July-August.
