More About Kursten

Joining Rush Creek Growers full-time in 2026 Kursten has become a crucial part of the production team. She also maintains and pulls Speciality Foliage and many edibles during the shipping season. She flows to wherever she is needed.

The 2027 staff musings prompt is to write about a plant we believe is an underrated or unsung hero.

Kursten: While I'm strolling through the greenhouses watering on the weekdays, I see plenty of beautiful plants, but with the amount of pollinators flocking to and from the bushy blooms on this messy-headed perennial, I always take a moment to check what all the buzz is about! Monarda (Bee Balm) produces pollen, nectar, and nutlets, attracting all kinds of birds and insects that benefit the ecosystem immensely. Not only is it great for our pollinating friends, but Bee Balm can be added to your self-care routine at home as well. One could make a delicious calming herbal tea, help soothe minor cuts and scratches by preparing a salve or a direct poultice, or display the beautiful flowers in salads and on top of tarts. From self-love to ecological love, Bee balm is a wonderful addition to your native wildflower gardens.
