Rich deep maroon-purple with white "pinheads," this heirloom scabiosa is the one we prefer out of the mix. English gardeners selected it in the 1600s and it was probably grown here before the American Revolution, with somber common names like "Mourning Widow." It is also used to create purple hued dyes.
